How to Convert WhatsApp Voice Notes to Text
By the Speakmi team · Updated October 2, 2026 · 2 min read
Voice notes are convenient to send and inconvenient to read, search, or quote. If you need the words in text form, you can convert any WhatsApp voice message without installing an app.
Export the voice note
- Open the chat and press and hold the voice message.
- Choose Forward or Share, then save it to Files or send it to yourself by email.
- On Android, voice notes are also stored in the WhatsApp Voice Notes folder as .opus files.
Transcribe it
- Open the voice.speakmi transcriber.
- Select the saved file. If your browser cannot read .opus, convert it to MP3 or M4A first with any free converter.
- Choose the spoken language and press Transcribe.
Good to know
- Voice notes are short, so the Fast model is usually enough.
- Mixed-language speech can confuse recognition. Pick the main language manually.
- Because processing happens in your browser, the private message stays on your device.
Why people do this
Common reasons include saving instructions, keeping records for work, reading a message in a quiet place, translating the text, and helping people who prefer or need written communication. Always get consent before transcribing and sharing someone else's voice message.
Troubleshooting .opus files
WhatsApp saves voice notes in the Opus format. Chrome and Edge usually play it, but Safari and some older browsers may not. If the transcriber cannot read the file, convert it to MP3 or M4A with a free tool such as VLC or Audacity, then upload the converted copy. The conversion does not change the words, only the container.
Privacy tips for personal messages
- Only transcribe messages you are a party to, or have permission to use.
- Delete exported audio files from shared folders after you have the text.
- Avoid pasting sensitive transcripts into public tools or group chats.
- Remember that a transcript can lose tone, humor, and sarcasm, so check important messages by listening.
